Naturalization Interview Checklist and Common Questions
What happens at the naturalization interview
A USCIS officer reviews your Form N-400, asks questions about your application and background, and tests your English and civics knowledge. Many applicants receive a decision the same day.
Document checklist
Bring originals and copies of documents that support your case:
- Permanent resident card.
- Passport and government issued photo ID.
- Marriage and divorce documents, if applicable.
- Travel history records and prior immigration documents.
- Tax transcripts or returns, if requested.
Civics and English testing basics
You must pass an English reading, writing, and speaking test and a civics test, unless you qualify for an exception. The civics test covers US history and government topics from the USCIS study list.
Common interview questions
- Where have you lived during the last five years?
- How many trips have you taken outside the United States?
- Have you filed your taxes and met any child support obligations?
- Do you support the US Constitution and agree to take the oath?
After the interview
You may receive a decision of approved, continued, or denied. A continued case often means USCIS needs more evidence or you must retake a test.
